As a whiskey lover, I felt slightly ashamed of my minimal knowledge of the spirit and set out to learn a bit about what differentiates each type of whiskey. What I found was that there are endless ways to categorize the beverage, from ingredients and distilling processes to country and region. There is much overlap between the different varieties and confusing terminology for each, as a term used to describe something in one country may describe something different in another. Our friends over at Artofmanliness.com have put together a comprehensive guide to scotch whisky that provides some interesting background and geographical anecdotes. Hopefully the illustrations below, showing some of the different types of whiskey produced in each country, will give you a bit more knowledge to spout drunkenly the next time you are out at the bar.
