MLB's Boozin' Allstar Team: Ten of Baseball's Favorite Hard Partiers
<< Return to Blog

Booze and baseball have have a long and colorful history together. From the parties at the team clubhouses to the bottles drank on flights, many a big-leaguer has raised his blood alcohol level up near their slump-time batting averages. Below is an entire All-star team of baseball's biggest booze hounds, comprised of legends and current players alike.

First Base: Miguel Cabrera

On October 9th, 2009, Detroit star Miguel Cabrera apologized to his teammates for going on a boozing spree that many feel cost him his focus over the span of two games. Losing the AL Central title to Minnesota, all eyes fell on Cabrera and his lackluster performance as a result of his drinking. Only twelve hours before the Saturday game, police were called to Cabrera's house where he reportedly had a blood alcohol level of 0.26. According to police, both Cabrera and his wife showed signs of a physical altercation, yet no charges were pressed and he went on to play the game later that night. Despite all of this, Cabrera reports, "No, no, no. I was good. I was focused." Unfortunately for Detroit fans, history shows differently.

Second Base: David Eckstein

Little did we know David Eckstein parties as hard as he plays. In a photograph that lands him the second baseman position on the All-star team, Eckstein is seen at a party chugging Jose Cuervo tequila straight from the bottle. The picture doesn't make it entirely clear how much was in the bottle before Eckstein got to it, or how much was left after he set it down, but we do know that the man can handle his liquor like the best of them.

Third Base: Wade Boggs

Endowed with a legendary drinking ability that would put John Belushi to shame, third baseman Wade Boggs might qualify as the biggest drunk in all of baseball history. During his time in the major leagues, Boggs was said to polish off 50 to 60 beers on every cross country flight the Yankees (presumably the Sox too) took. The average cross country flight takes about five hours. That means that, at that rate, Boggs drank upwards of 12 beers an hour, which is one beer every five minutes. The fact that this man was able to wake up (stand up?) the next morning and play professional baseball (and play it well) is an astonishing feat that few players - past or present - would be able to pull off.

ShortStop: Derek Jeter

(source)

In 2008, a several pictures (the best of them appearing above) leaked onto the Internet and subsequently have helped land Jeter the shortstop position on this all-boozers team. Clearly spending his off-season productively, Jeter is seen passed out poolside with girls, Coronas and a bottle of Grey Goose. This wouldn't be the first time we've seen Jeter sloshed, but unlike many partying athletes he manages to keep his head in the game. By the way, the blonde girl seen drinking with Jeter above was on Rock of Love until Bret Michaels gave her the boot.

Catcher: Rollie Hemsley

(source)

Rollie Hemsley was a catcher best known for his excessive drinking habits that got him kicked off of four MLB clubs. Before joining Alcoholics Anonymous, Hemsley partied like a member of Motley Crue. Stories are widespread of the catcher setting fire to cars, raising hell on trains and catching a ball dropped from the top of Cleveland's Terminal Tower (which he later repeated while sober). Most believe that he would have eventually been kicked out of the majors for his chaotic lifestyle, if he didn't decide to get help and sober up.

Pitcher: David Wells

(source)

Who better to pitch for the Boozin' Allstar team than a man who threw a perfect game "half drunk?" In 1998, Wells became one of only 15 pitchers in the history of baseball to throw a perfect game (no batters got to base). The night before, Wells reports that he was at a Saturday Night Live party getting tanked until early morning. On this, Wells has written, "...15 men in the history of organized baseball have ever thrown a perfect game...but only one of those men did it half-drunk, with bloodshot eyes, monster breath and a raging, skull-rattling hangover. That would be me."

Right Field: Babe Ruth

(source)

What team of drunken baseball players would be complete without the legendary Babe Ruth. One of the most common baseball jokes is that, while Ruth took no steroids, he did it all off hot dogs and beer. Regardless of one's own opinion on drinking, few can argue with Ruth's 714 career home runs. If any player were to challenge Boggs to a drinking contest, the only one who might stand a chance is Ruth, who is rumored to have begun experimenting with alcohol by age seven.

Left Field: Ted Williams

(source)

How bad can the booze be if was a favorite of Ted Williams, the last player to bat .400 in a full season? Williams was known to go on all-night boozers that often continued well into the light of day. Sometimes his partying was so epic that he would miss games, sleeping off hangovers in his room. While the press often reported him as coming down with bad colds, the truth was that the legendary player was just too out of control to make it to the game. Joe Cronin eventually warned Williams that if he dared to show up drunk again, he'd be fired from the team.

Center Field: Mike Cameron

(source)

If you thought Wade Boggs had talent for being able to play the day after drinking massive quantities of beer, you must stand in awe of Mike Cameron, who claimed in a 2007 interview that he has actually played games drunk. Cameron told a reporter, "...shit, I've played drunk... I went four for four with two jacks and eight ribbies. I'm not saying that's the only day I played drunk, but that was the best one." One marvels at how a center fielder (arguably one of the most physically demanding positions on the field) was able to chase down fly balls while intoxicated, but we'll have to take his word for it.

DH: David Ortiz

(source)

If this were an American League team and a DH was needed, who better than big-time slugger and World Series champ, David Ortiz. Seen here sloshed and slurring his words at a reggaeton club, Ortiz sure seems to enjoy himself in downtime. It is still in question whether Ortiz actually abused steroids, but we do know for sure that he likes the sauce.
