Around the World in 116 Beers
<< Return to Blog

Beer is by far the most popular beverage in the universe. Well, at least in the world. Have you ever wondered what countries produced beer, and what the most popular domestically produced beers were in these countries? We did. So then we decided to compile a ton of information, pictures, and then we got thirsty and got some imports. We now have a running checklist of our world tour of these beers: 3 down, 113 to go.  If you have any we missed, please leave a comment with the name of the beer and the country and I'll add it to the list!

I have to make a petition. PLEASE change the chilean beer. Cristal beer is popular here only because it's cheap. It's awful! It's only a bit more than yellow water with gas. A better choice would be Kunstmann beer. http://www.cerveza-kunstmann.cl/
  • myrtlebeachbums November 25, 2008 at 9:43am
If you think Cristal is embarassing, try having Budweiser listed for the US. Of all the beers that could have gone there, unfortunately Bud gets the nod. I guess there's no accounting for popularity due to price with your average redneck.

Hi!! I´m from Spain, and you are very wrong. The best Spanish beer is "Mahou". You must test it and change the blog. Bye http://www.feacem.es/NR/rdonlyres/DC55CDAB-7822-45C1-89D3-1696BB96D6AF/9083/mahou.jpg
  • kurnosem November 28, 2008 at 12:53pm
Hello! I'm from Spain too! And Estrella Damm IS NOT a famous spanish beer. You can choose: 1) Águila Amstel 2) Mahou 3) San Miguel Thanks!
  • Jordi November 28, 2008 at 5:53pm

Hi, I'm from Germany and to be represented by Oettinger is....embarrassing. Germany has so many really good beers and Oettinger is just the beer all alcoholics drink. Well, they are the best customers but they choose only the cheapest. It doesn't matter that it tastes like shit...
  • 48thRonin November 29, 2008 at 5:36am
I think most of these people posting comments are not realizing that this is the MOST popular beers in their own country. whether its good beer or shit beer. its about being the most drunk, best seller, in the country. NOT the best beer. we all have different tastes! now for my two cents, molson canadian is like drinking cow piss.. i have had cow piss, canadian is much worse! if you want a big kinda of brewery, try slemans. or out west, grasshopper. Guinness is by far the best beer in the world if........... you enjoy dark somewhat bitter beer. if you think its too dark or heavy, or i am gonna get fat because i drink guinness, then give your head a shake and think again. its yummy, and it has half the calories that regular shit american or canadian or most other beers.

Hello There! I am brazilian and wanted to say that you got that right, Skol is the top seller beer in Brazil (along with Brahma). But the photo you've picked is so boring. Our beer advertisements are famous for always having amazing girls and very little clothing. Take a look at this link (skol advertisement): http://cache02.stormap.sapo.pt/fotostore02/fotos//15/c0/82/3489_0005p5tt.jpg On the left there are regular inventions and on the right is how the inventions would be like if the inventor had a Skol before thinking. See ya!
  • sraven December 2, 2008 at 12:32am
I'll second Jordi - Estrella is easily the most typical beer in Catalunya. Estrella Damm is a Barcelona beer and is different from Estrella Galicia, a typical lager from Galicia. San Miguel seems to be pretty widespread throughout the country, so it might be safe to call that the typical Spain beer.
  • Hyper December 2, 2008 at 7:57am
Hey,where is the best beer of Puerto Rico? its medalla light,www.medallalight.com
  • BeerMe December 2, 2008 at 11:23pm
Since Budweiser was the standard chosen as the beer for the United States, I know that all the other beers are also equally crappy! Samuel Adams is a national brand and at least more patriotic sounding.
  • justinph December 3, 2008 at 12:45am
Have to disagree on the beer for Cuba. Having been to Cuba, the only beer I saw and drank there the entire time (this was about 3 years ago) was Bucanero. And it was served ice cold on 98 degree days. Best beer I ever had. Here's a picture (not mine, but CC licensed): http://flickr.com/photos/zoonabar/2156204762/
  • lostraven December 3, 2008 at 6:49am
I believe 48thRonin is mostly correct; they are often 'most popular' even if many of us think they're piss. That said, I noticed a lot of comments about Spain, and I want to add to them. Jordi mentioned it depends on what region you go to in Spain. In some regions, you'll never find Mahou but instead will be confronted with San Miguel. Or you want Cruzcampo and end up with Águila Amstel or Estrella Damm. Because of this, I think it makes it very difficult to pinpoint one single most popular beer in Spain. In the U.S., you'll find Budweiser in 90%+ of the locations in the country. In Spain, certain brands prevail in each region. The capital city, Madrid, is truly the best place to encounter them all, but don't judge the country by this one city alone. If you did that, you would likely say that Mahou is the #1 beer of Spain. Overall, it's a tough call.

Wow, I get the sudden craving for an Ice Cold Beer! www.anonweb.net.tc
  • Geordie December 3, 2008 at 8:29am
You are missing the Commonwealth of Dominica What I wouldn't do for an ice cold Kubuli right now. http://www.kubuli.dm/prod_kubulibeer.htm

In Costa Rica, only the tourist drink the Imperial. Pilsen is the real costarician beer. See: http://images.google.ca/images?q=pilsen%20costa%20rica
  • hammerT December 3, 2008 at 4:13pm
thumbs up! but the best beers are brewed in Franconia, Northern Bavaria. They've got all kinds of beers and there's the highest density of breweries in the world. best place i know if it comes to drinking beer. see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franconian_Switzerland and btw: in germany - land of beers - nobody drinks beer out of cans except for the homeless. so pls change the picture, its embarrassing. and btw: Oettinger is NOT Germany's favorite beer, trust me. It's almost insulting.
  • leandroferreira December 4, 2008 at 7:49am
"Hello There! I am brazilian and wanted to say that you got that right, Skol is the top seller beer in Brazil (along with Brahma)." I would add there Antartica, also a good-selling beer.
  • oogabooga December 4, 2008 at 10:17am
Where did you get this data? Just based on what brands you've heard of here in the US? It certainly looks like it. Belgium is not Duvel (not even close), it is Jupiler. China is not Tsingtao, it is Snow beer, which is actually now the highest selling beer in the world. Belarus may or may not be Baltika, I don't know, but that is a picture of Baltika 6, which is a porter, and that is certainly not the most popular. Same with Sri Lanka, that is Lion Stout, not Lion Beer pictured. New Zealand isn't Steinlager, it is Export Gold. I'm sure there are loads more errors in there, those are just the ones I caught.
  • oogabooga December 4, 2008 at 10:18am
Oh and you can add Tonga in there with Ikale
  • DootieBubble December 4, 2008 at 3:45pm
Nigeria's main locally produced drink is Star, like Ghana's. Cote d'Ivoire likes Flag and Senegal and Mali drink Castel. Burkina used to drink a lot of a brew called Burkinabe and Benin used to drink a lot of a brew called Beninoise but I wouldn't be surprised if locally produced versions of Castel have replaced these country specific models in the last few years.
  • alebest December 5, 2008 at 10:29am
Well, I know it's not the intention here to rate beers but I must say: If any of you ever come to Brazil DO - NOT try Skol, a WC Pilsen (water and corn) or any of the AMBEV Brewery beers. But there's salvation here: Try Kaiser Gold and eisenbahn beers www.eisenbahn.com.br
  • digicon December 6, 2008 at 8:48pm
A correction regarding Guyana. Carib beer, which you list as being produced in Guyana, is actually brewed in another Caribbean country, namely Trinidad and Tobago. It is the most popular beer in Trinidad and Tobago and as such Guyana should be replaced by Trinidad and Tobago on your list. Carib is popular throughout the Caribbean (see the logo in the background under the picture for Antigua-Barbuda) including Guyana but it is not a product of Guyana. http://www.caribbeer.com/carib.htm
  • Dermikes December 6, 2008 at 8:56pm
For Macedonia, you should/could use also the Vergina Beer (http://ratebeer.com/beerimages/full_size/12225.jpg). It's pretty historical.
  • bojancho December 6, 2008 at 10:47pm
To Dermikes: Vergina Beer would be Greek beer. Skopsko is Macedonian and it's pretty damn good.
  • Dermikes December 7, 2008 at 9:13am
To Bojancho: Really? I thought Vergina was in Macedonia, Alexander and all that...
  • bojancho December 7, 2008 at 8:57pm
To Dermikes: Well ancient Macedonia perhaps, if rtcrooks managed to travel in the past and find Vergina Beer there. The reality of the situation is that Vergina today is in modern-day Greece. But he did go to Macedonia, the modern-day country, and he drank Skopsko. So cheers!
  • blainemono December 8, 2008 at 7:16am
Agree. Żywiec is the best polish beer. Very popular are: Lech, Tyskie, Żubr, Dębowe. (from one company) And: Warka, Tatra and others. I tried a lot of beers, but Żywiec is a very high level, really. I recommend.
  • Fiachban December 9, 2008 at 4:23am
As for Ukraine, I would recommend "Chorne" ("Black") or "Premium" (quite obvious) by "Persha Pryvatna Brovarnya" ("First Private Brewery"). Obolon Lager (in fact, it is called Obolon "Oksamytove" (Velvet) in the photo) is good, but "Chorne" is much better.
