How to Keep Your Skin Soft and Smooth in Winter

Skincare is of utmost importance, and in today’s polluted world, it is downright necessary. Winter skincare is even more essential as the season keeps your skin dry for months at a stretch. Letting your skin dry out for such long periods of time every year can take a serious toll on the health of your skin.

Here are some tips on how to keep your skin soft and smooth during winter:

Avoid Hot Water

If you want to keep your skin feeling moist and supple, avoid washing up with hot water. You might be tempted to take a hot and steamy shower to keep yourself warm. However, exposure to hot water for extended periods of time is horrible for the skin.

If the water is hot enough to turn your skin red, it will irritate your skin and destroy it over time. Use lukewarm water for showers to maintain the softness of your skin.

Use a Humidifier

Humidifiers add much-needed moisture to the dry air in winter. Wherever you spend a lot of time, be it your bedroom or your office, keep a humidifier there to avoid exposure to dry winter air. Letting your skin breathe in the moisture let out by the humidifier will keep it from getting dry and red.

Turn the Heating Down

Thermostats can make the air around you drier. While it’s necessary to use them in the cold months, it might be a good idea to lower it enough that it leads to any skin irritation later.

Always Use Sunscreen

It’s a common misconception that you don’t need sunscreen unless the sun is really bright and big. Even if the day isn’t sunny, harmful rays from the sun are still coming toward us and affecting our skins. A good, high-quality sunscreen is a necessity even on gray winter days.

Drink Lots of Water

The lack of sweating in winter may lead many to think that they don’t need to hydrate as much as they do in summer, but this can have disastrous consequences on your health and your skin.

Your skin needs a lot of water every day to stay moist and warm. Even in dreary winter months when you don’t feel thirsty, make sure to drink at least two liters of fresh water every single day.

Only Stick to Moisturizing Face Wash and Body Soap

Our skincare routines must be modified to suit our skin’s needs in winter. While your regular face wash may work wonders in any of the other seasons, during wintertime, your skin needs a little extra help.

Before you buy face wash and body soap for those months, make sure to check if they have moisturizing qualities as the cleaning agents in cleansing products can wash away all the moisture and humidity from your skin.
